United Airlines Drastically Devalues MileagePlus Currency

United Airlines is greatly devaluing their MileagePlus currency.

What you need to know and do about the devalued United Mileage Plus currency

United Airlines devalued their loyalty currency Friday for flights beginning 11/15/19. They will now roughly match the value of SkyMiles, which, if you follow my posts, know are among the least valuable frequent flyer currencies around.

It will soon cost 50,000-80,000+ United miles for a simple US domestic coach ticket, compared to 25K miles today.

Do you fly United &/or collect United miles? These are the things you need to do right now:

  • If not flying United to earn status, immediately credit your flights to Aeroplan or Avianca’s Life Miles program.
  • Stop earning United miles on non-flying activities (e.g., MileagePlusX app, shopping portals, dining plans, rental cars, etc.)
  • Stop spending on United credit cards (after you’ve unlocked the sign-on bonus.)
  • If not chasing status AND live in a hub shared with American Airlines, switch your flying allegiance to American, whose miles are worth more.
  • If anybody has a stash of United miles they were planning to use for that special trip, you’ll need to get that trip booked ASAP. There is a mad rush to grab the last available award inventory. Further, United will likely dramatically reduce the remaining pre-11/15/19 award inventory to curb their losses. DM me with questions, concerns or if you need any destination ideas!

MilesWife and I have made good use of United miles. Most recently, we cashed in 70,000 miles to fly from Dubai to Milan in Lufthansa First Class.
